Lutheran Habitat for Humanity BuildIn conjunction with Lutheran Build and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, TriState Habitat for Humanity is building a house in Florence near Mt. Zion road and I-75 for the Haddix Family. Along with financial assistance, Thrivent Build hopes to provide 50% of the volunteer labor from Lutheran churches in the tri-state area. They have granted two build dates for Gloria Dei volunteers, Saturday May 22 and Saturday June 12. Christy Frey is managing the financial portion with Thrivent. Steve Smith is Gloria Dei’s congregational champion for the construction build. Our goal is to coordinate and assemble enough workers for the Gloria Dei build dates, and also find groups willing to provide lunch for the workers. Members of our church are welcome and encourage to participate on any Saturdays starting April 17th through August. Gloria Dei has been granted September 11 as our next sponsored build date for the Haddix family. The TriState Volunteer Hub should be updated soon to reflect the need for 14 volunteer on Saturday September 11th from 8:15am to 3:30pm. Volunteers do not need to be present the whole time. Any hours you can donate are greatly appreciated. Thank you to all who have been able to take time out of their busy schedule to help with the build! Hope to see you on the 11th, Steven Smith, 859-261-6030 7/29/210 UpdateReminder - If you are looking for something ‘rewarding’ to do on any Saturday in the next couple months, the Lutheran Builds Habitat house is in need of volunteers! Due to the heat we have been wrapping up by lunch most Saturdays. So it is okay if you can only stop by and help in the morning. With the delays in the schedule, most remaining Saturdays do not have a church sponsor. Feel free to stop by any Saturday morning you can help out. * July 31st - Open (Pulled-pork lunch provided by Jan Withowski / Thrivent Builds) * August 7th - Hopeful Lutheran Church * August 14th - Open * August 21st - Bethany Lutheran / Campus Ministries * August 28th - Open * Saturdays September through October - Open & in need of a sponsoring group (Any dates look good for a Gloria Dei rescheduled build date? Let me know!) A big thank you to everyone who has been helping out! It has been rewarding to work side by side with the Haddix family as they build their new home. Steven Smith, 859-261-6030 7/20/2010 UpdateAfter being out of town for several weeks, I was able to stop by the Thrivent Builds-Northern Kentucky Habitat home for Joan Haddix on Saturday July 17th. The walls are up and we worked on the roof & siding. Attached is a picture of the house. Joan was there preparing the outside walls for siding and we also celebrated her birthday which was on Sunday.
They are need of volunteers for this Saturday. St. John and St. Luke Lutheran Church have not been able to fill all of the reserved spots. Even if you do not like climbing on the roof or ladders for siding, there is plenty of interior work to do. If you are available Saturday, please sign up using the TriState Volunteer Hub website.

Thank you to those who have helped on prior build days, Steven Smith, 859-261-6030
6/12/2010 UpdateWe won’t let a little rain dampen our enthusiasm for Habitat Humanity Lutheran Build. But with torrential rain, over 2 inches according to measurements taken by the airport, Saturday’s build was canceled. Too bad since we had over 20 volunteers signed up for the day, ready to complete the exterior and raise the interior walls. Any interest in picking a day in August as a Gloria Dei rain date? All of August is currently open due to delays in the build. Let me know if there is interest and which Saturdays would work best for you. You can always stop out at the site on any Saturday, just check the TriState-Habitat’s Volunteer Hub website to see if people are needed. http://www.habitat-tristate.org/ Join Code “thriventnky2010” Steven Smith, 859-261-6030
5/28/2010 UpdateThank you to the 14 Gloria Dei volunteers who came out Saturday May 22nd to help build the Haddix family new home. Under the direction of Habitat crew leaders, we used brute force to remove and clean the forms used to hold together the concrete walls pour just 24 hours earlier. Ruth, Mary, and Martha Circles provided a wonderful fried chicken lunch. We also covered the footer drain surrounding the outside of the house with pea gravel. Click Here for some pictures of the build progress. The next Gloria Dei build day is June 12th. Attached is an undated schedule provided by TriState-Habitat. Because the build is so far behind, TriSate-Habitat is hoping everyone takes advantage of the Volunteer Hub online website to find additional Saturdays to stop out at the site and help keep the build moving. If you have any questions about using the website, please let me know. Tara Price has made extensive changes to the website based on suggestions from our members. It’s now a lot easier to use. 4/28/2010 Update on the Lutheran Habitat for Humanity Buildfrom Jan Witkowski the Thrivent Builds Chapter Specialist. The delay in completing building permits continues. Instead of waiting for all permits to be finalized, the decision was made to start working on what we can now. With the “Wall Raising” ceremony delayed from the original April 17th date, we will instead be holding a “Ground Breaking” kick off event on May 1st at 10:30am lasting for about 45 minutes. Since no construction will be taking place during the ground breaking this Saturday, your entire family is invited! This is one of the few opportunities for children under the age of 16 to see the site. What does this mean for Gloria Dei volunteers? •Our build dates of May 22 and June 12 currently remain as is, pending any additional delays. •The type of tasks we will be working on for those days will change since the build schedule needs to slide several weeks. •We may be asked to pick up an additional Saturday in August to help complete the house. There is no street parking at the site, so a TANK RideShare parking lot will be utilized. (Click here for parking directions) |
