GLORIA DEI LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES March 9, 2008
PRESENT: Denise Bosma, Rebecca Brode, Shelley Dick, Pastor Vicki Garber, Walda Helvie, Jennifer Hegna, Amy Honnerlaw, Steve Kieffner, Todd Kuhse, and Hansel Ramathal.
ABSENT: Craig Bluemlein, Doug Ebert, Kelli Sittason, Don Shattuck
Todd called the meeting to order. Shelley led the opening prayer.
Todd presented the agenda. Steve moved, and Hansel seconded, to accept the agenda, and the motion carried.
I. APPROVAL OF PREVIOUS MINUTES Todd presented the minutes from the Feb. 24 meeting. Jennifer moved, and Pastor Vicki seconded, to accept the minutes as amended, and the motion carried.
II. SPIRITUAL SHARING III. 2007 FINANCIAL REPORT Steve reported that 2007 giving was higher than 2006. Our expenses did outgrow the increase in giving, though. Our cash balance is good considering the extra unexpected expenses (Narthex/HVAC repairs). Steve will check on the property expense of $10,344 in December. Some of this property expense may need to be classified as a special item (not an operating expense). Hansel made the motion to accept the 2007 report noting the possibility of amending some of the property expense in December as a special item. Denise seconded. All approved and the motion carried.
Steve also reported that the Finance Committee has chosen Thrivent as the lender for a construction loan of $850,000 at 5.75%. Ideally this will be paid off in three years as the funds come in from the Capital Campaign.
IV. RENOVATION & CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATES The Capital Campaign was a huge success, with $741,287 in initial pledges, with more to follow.
The renovation drawings will be finalized this week. The initial review for permitting will happen soon. Three general contractors will bid. The bids will be “not to exceed” bids.
V. DISCIPLESHIP TEAM UPDATE Spiritual Gifts: Gail Cato has agreed to serve as a chair/co-chair for Nurturing Outreach. The Spiritual Gifts discipleship is still searching for an HR Chairperson.
VI. OLD BUSINESS Todd presented a document for the creation of a Pre-School Task Force. (see attached) Pastor Vicki made a motion, and Shelley seconded, to accept the document and form the task force. The motion carried. Also, Rebecca made a motion, and Walda seconded the candidates for the task force. The motion carried.
VII. NEW BUSINESS Hansel asked to do a short presentation on Committee Night regarding helping with the water supply for an orphanage in Rwanda. This was approved.
Todd made a motion to officially authorize the Renovation Task Force to proceed with the renovation as approved at the Congregational Meeting. This was seconded by Steve and the motion carried.
Pastor Vicki asked Council for a sun shade for one of the sanctuary windows. Twice a year the evening sun is right in her eyes during the evening service. Pastor will get some estimates before the next meeting.
Pastor Vicki asked Council to establish a Mission Team, to focus on the mission of the church, so that our mission does not become to renovate. A motion was made to form this team with the suggested leaders. Denise seconded. The motion passed.
The Décor Team: Mark Willoughby will chair. Several suggestions for members were made. Todd made a motion that we approve Mark as Chair and recruit members as named. Amy seconded and the motion carried.
Facilities Use Team: to oversee closet clean out, storage needs, etc. Steve moved that a committee be formed with members representing all church functions. A possible Chair was discussed. Jennifer seconded and the motion carried.
Rebecca made a motion for the church to hold a Groundbreaking Ceremony on April 13, 2008. The youth will provide lunch as a fundraiser. This was seconded by Shelley and the motion carried.
Rebecca made a motion that Council approve a white water rafting trip for our Middle School youth. Waivers and permission slips will be required from parents. This was seconded by Shelley and the motion carried.
VIII. ADJOURNMENT
Pastor Vicki led the closing prayer and Todd adjourned the meeting.
The next Committee Night will be April 7 at 6pm. Pastor Vicki asks us to join her in prayer at 5:30pm (in lieu of the first Monday morning prayer meeting.)
The next Council Meeting will be on April 20, 2008 from approximately 12:30 to 2:00 pm.
Respectfully submitted, Amy Honnerlaw Secretary |
